Matthew 25:21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter the joy of your master.’
In this excerpt of Matthew, we find the parable of the talents. In that story, the master has generously entrusted three of his servants with a set amount of money before he goes away on a trip. None of them knows how long the master will be gone, but they each have a choice to make - they can utilize and maximize the things that they have been given or they can just receive and withhold those things until the master comes back. Of course, when the master does arrive back home, an account must be given for what each person has done with what they have been given. Those who made good with their gift were given even more. But the one who held onto this gift and did nothing with it, in the end had everything taken away from him.
This principle of “stewardship” has always resonated deeply with me because it’s a reminder that God is our Provider (Matthew 7:11), and every good thing comes from Him (James 1:17). In other words, we never really “own” anything in this life - we are just stewards of that which has been entrusted to us by God. This passage reminds us of the importance of properly caring for the things God has entrusted to us.
This is why one of GO Church’s six core values is that we “Steward With Integrity.” This includes, but is not limited to: our health, finances, marriage, children, career, friendships, talents, and dreams. We seek to do all that we can to maximize what God has given us, to use it to further His kingdom and bring Him glory. My hope is that, in the end, all of us will hear those sweet words: “Well done, good and faithful servant”.
As you think through the gifts God has given you, ask yourself these questions:
Am I stewarding God’s gifts with integrity? Or have I felt entitled to them?
How can I better steward the gifts (see list above) God has given me?
