DAY 17 | MATTHEW 23

Matthew 23:10 Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. 11 But the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.

Leading up to these passages of Scripture, Jesus is condemning the religious exploits of the scribes and Pharisees. He instructs people to listen to what these religious “leaders” are teaching, but do not follow their example. This is because the Pharisees and scribes were placing themselves in elevated roles and positions only to be noticed by men. They loved their titles and seats of honor, but they forgot who the real authority belongs to. Jesus reminds them that He is the greatest, and yet even He didn’t come to flaunt his position of authority, but to serve the least of these. This is why He says,

“Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. But the greatest among you shall be your servant.”

The point is simple: Christ-like leaders serve. None of us are above servanthood, no matter our position of influence or our socio-economic status. After all, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, came to the earth not to be served, but to serve others and give his life as a ransom for many (Philippians 2:7-8).

After you read Matthew 23, reflect on these questions.

  1. How would you define servant leadership?

  2. What examples of servant leadership does Jesus provide us throughout the book of Matthew?

  3. How am I viewed by those that I lead? How well am I serving them?
